In a word, NO! This is definitely a distinction WITH a difference. The words are almost always used interchangeably, and no greater disservice could be done.
History is full of leaders, good and bad, that were lousy managers. Conversely, a lot of great managers were never able to attain the role of a leader. Some leaders may coincidentally be good managers, but a sterling manager doesn't necessarily have the charismatic leadership gene. What is the difference?
Leader- A leader's job is to create and enunciate a vision and to inspire his followers to pursue it.
Manager- The manager's job is to make the vision tangible.
As a professional, in any profession with responsibility over others, knowledge is key. The best way to respect your subordinates, and yourself, is to recognize which one you are.
There is nothing wrong with being either, but those who try and lead, who are really only managers, will do more harm than good in the long run. And those who follow them are the ones that suffer the most.
